An artist kind of gets to play God of his own universe, and Ford Smith is thoroughly enjoying this role in creating his latest (and, ahem... self-proclaimed) masterpiece of a cityscape. Because Ford doesn't plan out most of his paintings in advance, his city planning here is spontaneous and intuitive as he let's his imagination wander while his masterful skill follows this organic lead.
I'm sure that he didn't expect it to lead to such labor-intensive, geometric detail considering the work that's involved, but that's the nature of his process, and he has enjoyed creating this painting more than any in recent memory.
Ford will return to his classic landscape paintings with trees and water next week, but we'll surely see this new cityscape series interspersed throughout his body of work ongoing. Like his Bloomscapes, Human Nature, Monochromes, et al, this ever-curious artist has expanded his mind and his talent to create a thrilling, new series which further demonstrates why he's remained one of the nation's top artists for 15 years.
Watch the video to appreciate the innumerable details emerging, as Ford adds a little commentary...!
